and the friends

he collected in life

the potted tomato and roses he tends

feed mostly deer

these days he depends

on one daughter

for errands pretends

to disown his son

the stance he defends

and the stupid things done

before his time ends

he’ll read every mystery

the bookmobile lends

but as for his history

his dead wife and friends

At 96 he can’t make amends
