The assignment for my next Third Thursday Poets is to write about a
memorable plane trip. I figured I may as well regale two groups for the
price of one with this poem. It was inspired by an experience that
happened while I was returning home from Florida the summer my brother
got married.

***

TURBULENCE

On an early summer evening,

thunder booms--lightning flashes—

rain pelts the city.

In an airplane, buffeted about

with sickening, continuous,

up, down, sideways motion,

over the loudspeaker,

the pilot says we may be diverted.

I fight back my lunch,

grip the armrests, close my eyes.

The roller coaster gradually ceases.

The plane lands--I’m home!
