Group-2 critiques, 2-24-22

1. Leonard's piece:

An interesting parable re water magic. Did it really happen this way in the
story? Or, did the heat result in the narrator's misperceptions or even
hallucinations? Such is left to the reader's fancy. A neat little gem! But
it made me thirsty. Got to get some water!

2. Alice's piece:

Unfortunately I am not familiar with this work by Mr. Wild. But I would have
fit in as I have known folks who have had the misfortune of spending time in
prison. It is always interesting and curious when something from our past,
becomes part of something in our future in a unique way.

3. Joan's piece:

A nicely structured piece which celebrates the value and importance of
remembering. Human memory is a fascinating phenomenon. It is essential for
learning. It is a useful tool for folks with visual impairments. It changes
over a lifetime. Unfortunately, though we as a species preserve and even
remember our species history, we don't seem to learn much from it, as we
have repeatedly made the same mistakes over and over.

4. Valerie's piece:

There is a lot here! First I will admit that the ending of this piece made
me tear up a bit. Over the years, I have worked with a number of Julie-like
individuals. God help you if you look different or have different concerns
than so called normal people. The observation of how "difficult" for lack of
a better word, things like weddings and other large gatherings in unfamiliar
places can be for visually impaired folk, is very true and real. I have
heard podcasts in which strategies for addressing same were discussed. It
was great to learn that the problem was actually recognized. I think such
strategies and discussions should be begun at a young age in blindness
rehab. But they're not! Unfortunately our species is both intolerant and
judgmental about individuals who are perceived as "different." It is what
has caused much of our bloody and destructive history. I fear we will never
recognize that we are all more alike than we are different and all are valid
human beings. As I said, there is truly a lot here! A piece that evokes such
thought and feeling is, at the least, truly a successful work of art.
