At 96
by Joan Myles

And all the friends

He collected in life

The potted tomato and roses he tends

Are food for deer

These days he depends

On one daughter

For errands and lately pretends

To be mad at his son

For the stance he defends

And the stupid things done

Before his life ends

He’ll read every mystery

The bookmobile lends

But as for his history

His dear wife and his friends

At 96 says he can’t make amends
