1. Joan's piece:
Well, this piece is, like many of Joan's pieces, not immediately obvious.
The best I can do: is that she is referring to either an autistic child who
isn't able to engage socially or at least initially. It could also be about
adopting a pet from a shelter (one that possibly was abused) and giving it a
chance to become a true and well treated beloved pet in the author's world.

2. Leonard's piece:
Wow! Utilizing science fiction to explain and illustrate how his observed
world appears now, which more likely is due to a unique form of visual loss,
is well, wonderful. I too sometimes experience something similar though I
view it as a "white out." 10 feet, for me that would be delightful.
Leonard's ability to write about a situation that would highly disturb many
others in a whimsical way is very engaging and is one of his trademarks. You
are fortunate to not have to deal with what I call "the black lace
phenomenon" which is another visual variation that I know all too well. This
is in my opinion, a great piece and I thank you for it! Disability writing
at its best!

3. Valerie's piece:
Please correct me if I am wrong, having actually seen these things earlier
in life when vision was available provides the dream material. I have had
many fascinating discussions with friends who were born totally blind about
nonvisual concept formation. A dear blind friend of mine says that" she
doesn't really know if she is seeing black or white. I have another friend
who like you had some usable vision and now knows that their visual vista is
black. He had great difficulty accepting the change. The blackness part is
very scary for many. Every day I am sincerely grateful for the remaining
usable light perception. Your well written poem has obviously made me think
and ponder much.

4. Alice's piece:
A very moving tribute. I truly love the juxtaposition of making Italian lace
pieces and then ringing a chicken's neck. It provides both prospective and
sets the stage for what follows. I truly enjoyed this piece.
