The Language OfFear

The news cameover the speaker

in the middle ofa spelling test.

"PresidentKennedy is dead. Let's all stand and

pray!"

Doesn’t soundvery satisfying.

Nothing came tome but the silent scream

"I'mscared!"

The shaking in mylegs wouldn't stop.

Fear is notknowing or understanding. It is better to express your fear than to bear it insilence.

"Sister,what happened?"

one classmatebravely asked.

We waited for ananswer.

She couldn’tgive you one because there was no answer.

She could onlygo through a ritual, leaving more questions than answers

"Sit downand finish your test!"

Sniffles andwhimpers cut the silence.

There was no onein charge and we knew it.

That was the mostfrightening thing of all.

No one incharge. .

All these yearslater, no answers

come from theones in charge--

this Presidentisn't dead, but totally

oblivious.

Thin words aremeaninless in all the

hate, fury andfear.

I would saythat the failure of our institutions to give answers is frightening.

If no one isin charge there is no control.

The church issupposed to be in charge.

I'm 65 now, notnine--

We are alone,

except for a hopeto change,

care and prayknowing why.

At 65 thereare no answers either,

but we know alittle of what the prayer is for.

It is a littlebetter that way.

We can atleast hope for change.
