Below is my submission for next weeks meeting. Also reminding you that your pieces are due  Tuesday.

 I Remember Schindler 


 


I remember a rally cry --

May my country always be right!

Though whether it be wrong or right --

and here the words blur in my mind --

my country forever comes first.


 


How can I best serve my country

when it strays away from its path? 

Shall I reinforce its errors,

defending it against ethics,

protecting from consequences?

Would that make me a patriot?

What would my great grandchildren say?


 


Or should I stand up for values 

expressed in our Constitution,

declaring our aspirations

that we strive to actualize?

Would that pronounce me a partisan,

or would that be a traitorous  path?


 


And I think of whistle blowers 

who fought to keep their country true,

whose lives and names were defiled 

by those who placed self over honor,

through twisting democracy’s soul 

for their own demented interests.


 


I am reminded of Schindler 

who battled to save the conscience --

not the venal might -- of his people.


 


Truth and justice trumps corruption.
