Crippled Red-headed Boy


 


Cold steel braces mirrored the blazing sun,

as did his harsh, skeletal crutches

that supported his thin pale, frail body

in a perverted, twisted upright stance. 

His vital, wild, flaming orange hair 

was in contrast to his other features,

from which my mind staggered in confusion. 


 


At nine, I could not understand. 

In some weird way, I felt threatened 

by the otherness of this boy.

I wanted not to get too close. 

The other three kids were strangers. 

We were waiting for our parents.

I wondered what they thought and felt.


 


He stood among us all alone.

In part, I felt despair for him,

too timid in my discomfort 

to approach him in any way. 

I knew the sense of feeling strange.

Maybe we were not so different. 

My parents came, and in my leave, 

I avoided his gaze while passing.
