12-19-19 Critique session for Group 2

1. Joan's piece:

Though I am not totally sure I have this correctly, I believe the piece
contrasts the difference between a man's reaction to the actions or
presentation of another man vs. the way women react to the doings or
presentations of other women. Again, though I am not sure of this
interpretation, I believe Joan is pointing out that women are quick to judge
one another and they cling tightly to their judgments. I believe this is
often true. When two men have an issue or point of disagreement between
them, it will be addressed even coming to blows in some situations but is
then essentially over. I have seen two guys get into it over a belief to the
point where one slugs the other. He then helps the other up and buys him a
drink. The issue between them is done! There is no residue when they meet
again. I hope I am essentially in the ballpark with this interpretation.

2. Valerie's piece:

Ah, the trial of the blank page. We have all been there. The legendary
singer/songwriter Phil Ochs killed himself because: "the words wouldn't come
any more." There is a characterization of not writing being like a winter of
the mind and spirit. I am writing these critiques on Sunday the 15th and
haven't written anything in 35 days. It is a feeling of discomfort. However
I have learned, that the muse is never far away and there will be more poems
and stories. Finally as always, much has been conveyed in few words.

3. Leonard's piece:

"Stability needs no direction, a world replete within itself."
Well, this sounds pretty good to me. In the best circumstances: errors,
mistakes and flaws can and should lead to learning. There is nothing wrong
with making mistakes as long as one learns something from them. It is like
the lines from "Anthem" by Leonard Cohen:
"there's a crack in everything,
That's how the light gets in."
I love the line below:
"A living river may twist and twine,
but never runs in pristine circles."
A reference (probably a conscious one I am guessing) to the water course way
of the Tao which may lead to wisdom.

4. Alice's piece:

Another chapter for the book I have said Alice should write" Tales from an
Indiana Life: A memoir. An evocative snapshot from long ago which captures
a child's moment of realization. It is well written and holds one's
interest.
