Mountain Lullaby

Sol slips slowly behind muted Blue Ridge Mountain tops. 
Mountain crests wear his radiant crimson  crown. 
Congenial cattle croon satisfaction, 
mooing from low steep rocky pastures. 
Buddha-wise bovines prepare for slumber. 
Mountain slopes don evening shadows. 
Distinct tall pines morph into shapeless grey  shades. 
Night’s sacred somber vestments cloak ridge and  hollow. 
A gentle mother lulls her children to sleep. 
On an old back porch my black Labrador 
turns to obsidian pool at my feet, 
as we accept the peace of solitude, 
filled with comfort from our companionship, 
and resting in the night’s ambient soul, 
filling our hearts with a whispering breeze, 
saying, “Here you are never alone.”
