Hi Group 1 and 2 Writers,
Just a comment about multiple critique groups. It is more than acceptable
to have the same piece critiqued by more than one group. In fact, I think
it is a great idea. Most serious writers I know, who like working with
critique groups, often submit to multiple groups. Every reader has a unique way
of looking at a piece and therefore has a unique contribution to make. Some
of their observations will be useful, and others will not.
Groups of all types develop their own mores. They tend to have a similar
way of perceiving the world. They say birds of a feather flock together.
However, it is also true that birds who flock together become of a feather.
Consequently, if you only get the opinion of one group, you will begin to
look like those ducks. Some flocks will be so different from you, that
sticking exclusively with them can be damaging, if you don’t open yourself to
different outlooks.
I am going to send the piece I recently submitted to Group 2 the critique
session at large. It has been significantly edited and, I hope, improved
through the changes made in accordance with some of the suggestions I
received. Now I want to see how a different group of critics will react to it.
Group 2, please feel free to comment on it anew.
Leonard
