Hi You All,
I know you have been waiting with baited breath to hear my explanation to
my poem, Just Do It. So (drum roll) here it is. I’d love to get some
feedback if you have the time and inclination. I think even if I didn’t have a
blank-out in our session, I wouldn’t have been able to put this stuff
together extemporaneously. But I tried.
------
In verse one and 2 I’ve attempted to take the behavior of life to create
itself and to participate in the process of evolution, down to a fundamental
level. The poem states that there is the foundational drive the yin and
yang (masculine and feminine, or positive and negative, or black and white,
and all polemics) to unite. One plays a seemingly passive role of
advertising eager receptivity and the other takes the active role of seeking out.
That is basic not only in biology but all forces in the universe. The
question asked is does this amount to an intension devotion or love? The verse
only poses the question. Not an answer.
In verse 3, ‘Mother is a manifestation of the feminine principle who
awaits discovery by the questing male energy. The verse is an attempt to
universalize the ideas in the first two verses. Any mystery not yet fathomed by
mankind or other intelligences is seen here as the feminine. The implication
I try to make is that mystery has an active side which is the come hither
power. In biology it is often expressed by pheromones. But any mystery will
be alluring to a seeking intelligence that wants to know. . So the ‘Mother’
is the mother of discovery, invention as well as life. Mother, mystery,
feminine are all manifestations of the same quality.
The following verse says that discovery is a two edged sword. Penetrating
the mystery can have many different effects. It can be a force for good or
evil. It cannot be predicted. The desire to understand, to conquer, is
constant. But the outcomes will be both good and bad. Thus the Pandora’s Box
analogy. Creativity, or the union of the yin and yang, will never cease so
Pandora’s Box will never be emptied or closed. Another analogy here is the
eating of the fruit of knowledge in Eden.
In the final verse, I want to believe that love, passion, devotion,
referring to the questions posed in the first two verses, are all as discussed
above. It’s an uncertain world when you don’t know what’s coming out of the
box. But I have faith that it’s all good in the end, even if I can’t know
and understand it all. So I choose to accept this quest, represented by the
original egg and sperm. I will seek discovery, pursue mystery, and follow
my passions. They are my guiding stars. I accept the bumpy unpredictable
Rhode. This is, with the belief that it’s all good. Thus the title. Just Do
It.
I hope this doesn’t confuse you more than it elucidates.
Leonard
