Cold Little Bird
Outside her clear porch door, a little bird shivers --
>From the distant northwest, a rosy finch
and recent settler to milder Virginia.
The temperature is down to the teens.
Its feathers puffed to ward off the cruel cold,
unable to fly, it’s barely conscious.
Did it crash into our transparent door
while seeking to eat from the porch feeders?
She went outside to see if she could
scoop the poor bird up and take it inside,
where she hoped warmth would revive the woeful soul.
The bird lay in her hands with nary a protest.
“Little one, you will not survive,” she lamented,
then transferred it to a cat carrier,
thinking the Rosey would die in quiet peace.
But miraculously, within an hour,
the finch began to bob about the pen,
and in time, began to eat and drink.
By morning’s end, we let it go into the cold.
It paused on the railing as if to say “goodbye”.
By late noon, six Rosey’s perched in the cherry tree
patiently waiting their turn at the feeders.
One flew down and fearlessly faced the door,
its wings gesticulating as though to say,
“Thank you for your kindness.”
