<p class="MsoNormal">Outside her clear porch door, a little bird shivers --<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">From the distant northwest, a rosy finch <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">and recent settler to milder Virginia. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The temperature is down to the teens.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Its feathers puffed to ward off the cruel cold, <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">unable to fly, it’s barely conscious. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Did it crash into our transparent door <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">while seeking to eat from the porch feeders?<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">She went outside to see if she could <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">scoop the poor bird up and take it inside, <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">where she hoped warmth would revive the woeful soul. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The bird lay in her hands with nary a protest. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">“Little one, you will not survive,” she lamented,<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">then transferred it to a cat carrier, <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">thinking the Rosey would die in quiet peace. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">But miraculously, within an hour,<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">the finch began to bob about the pen,<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">and in time, began to eat and drink.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">By morning’s end, we let it go into the cold. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">It paused on the railing as if to say “goodbye”.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">By late noon, six Rosey’s perched in the cherry tree <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">patiently waiting their turn at the feeders. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">One flew down and fearlessly faced the door, <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">its wings gesticulating as though to say, <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">“Thank you for your kindness.”<o:p></o:p></p></div><div><br></div></div>
