This day is the day that your pieces are due.  Also my contrubution is below.

Saying Goodbye
 
  
 
So many to whom I’ve said goodbye.
 
So many ways to say farewell --
 
to take my leave of this condition. 
 
What is not the same about today,
 
not to wish you all a tres bon jour?
 
That suggests another time ahead, 
 
a case I cannot presume at all. 
 
I can’t take my leave and walk away,
 
when what lies before us is doubtful.
 
  
 
So sad, so very sad. 
 
My heart is filled with grief, 
 
for there is no going home --
 
no home to return to --
 
no form in which to settle,
 
if Earth is not for humans;
 
that lovely bedeviled world 
 
which we have loved so dearly.
 
That goodbye would empty my soul of hope 
 
and fill it with endless longing.
 
The catastrophes are without end –
 
drought, floods, whirlwinds, storms, fires, pestilence.
 
 
 
For what? 
 
a better cell phone, 
 
 more sugar in our diets,
 
more toilet paper --
 
more money, and more power?
 
  
 
What will we do when there’s nothing to buy --
 
no food that will grow on a dried bone --
 
no one left to have power over --
 
when even a drink of pure water 
 
is only a memory in time?
 
  
 
Surely, we can feel this coming. 
 
We are beyond signs and prophecies.
 
It is occurring in the here and now.
 
The Earth cries out for us to listen.
 
Yet we go on in our unknowing ways.
 
We congregate in the face of death.
 
We refuse to believe in blatant truth. 
 
We prefer the wisdom of demigods
 
and those that revel in destruction 
 
that will separate the good from the bad.
 
Good luck on that misguided thought, my friends.
 
  
 
Yet, I sit upon a throne of hope
 
that no matter how late the matter, 
 
we will at last come to our senses. 
 
  
 
Please make it so.
