As usual you havecaptured the essence of something here. It has to do with the connection  she feels with the generations via the samebooks.  There is a common heritage thatshe shares with her mother. That heritage has taught both of them  to take what life dolls out  with a stiff upper lip, but one that alsoteaches that it is worth living. YHou paint a picture of a woman (you) sittingand listening to a book, and following  the old tradition of drinkingg  tea.

Sittingin the dark at four in the morning

Withan audiobook to fill the empty hours,

Ithink of my no-nonsense British mother

Whofaced old age and grief head-on with cups of milky tea

Andthe printed company of Rosamunde Pilcher and P. D. James

ToLink her to the long-ago past of parents, greengrocers, and village halls.

What is a greengrocer?

Victorygardens, ration books, and nights spent in air-raid shelters

Taughther early that life was fragile and unfair but

stillworth living with fortitude, humor, and faith.

Pickingup the invisible steel thread that binds generations to one another,

Iput the kettle on and continue reading as dawn approaches.
