Sitting in the dark at four in the morning
With an audiobook to fill the empty hours,
I think of my no-nonsense British mother
Who faced old age and grief head-on with cups of milky tea
And the printed company of Rosamunde Pilcher and P. D. James
To Link her to the long-ago past of parents, greengrocers, and village
halls.
Victory gardens, ration books, and nights spent in air-raid shelters
Taught her early that life was fragile and unfair but
still worth living with fortitude, humor, and faith.
Picking up the invisible steel thread that binds generations to one another,
I put the kettle on and continue reading as dawn approaches.
