In understanding this piece, we need tounderstand the perspective of the writer. The writer does nhot have the freedomto enjoy life the way these two souls do.
I don’t know if sheor her husband everdid.
Her guide dog never had that freedomeither, at least not when he was in harness. So, this is a description of hownice it would be if. A beautiful picture is being painted,
but isimagination enough?
The one part which is present however, is the peace andsatisfaction that they get in each other’s company.
Perhaps, that makes up for what is not .
Or maybe not.
The effort surprises the reader with the closinglines
in which she describes what the realityis.
It is masterful the way she throws that atthe reader at the last minute.
The readeris shocked into empathy for the writer.
RUNning Free
Anot uncommon practice,
Twosouls amble along the water’s edge,
Leavingprints in cool wet sand
Andrelishing the time before them.
Warmed, not burned, by a rising sun,
Theseold friends enjoy the peace
Foundin one another’s company
Asseagulls shriek and dive.
Archingdriftwood into salty air,
Theman laughs as his dog takes chase.
Unencumberedby wheelchairs and service dog vests,
Theyrace along eternity’s shore.
