The Smell of Love


 


If love had a smell, what would it be?

Perhaps the scent of an autumn breeze,

or salty winds blowing from the sea --

roses and lilacs in early spring --

brewing coffee in winter’s mornings.


 


If love could be touched, how would it feel?

Perhaps like sun on a frosty day --

how my heart is touched by a child’s smile --

the warmth of my dog’s head on my knee --

when my wife’s soft hand touches me.


 


If love were a sound, how would I know?

By how my body breathes soft and low,

And my mind drifts on its dulcet tone --

the way my spirit rises on its peaks --

a banishment of fear in its peace.


 


There are many ways love sheds its glow,

too many ways to say how we know.

But if it smells like love, feels like love 

and sounds like love, rest assured it is love.
