Little brownish  bird, no bigger than a finch,<br>
<br>
sitting on my feeder, with eyes closed shut.<br>
<br>
Three feet away, I slide the glass door aside,<br>
<br>
careful to make measured, unstartling moves.<br>
<br>
I am worried  concerning her wellbeing.<br>
<br>
Approaching her cautiously and slowly,<br>
<br>
speaking quite softly as I advance,<br>
<br>
until my eyes are one inch away.<br>
<br>
Still, she remains with sleeping vision.<br>
<br>
I delay, not knowing what’s required.<br>
<br>
Is she diseased, or just taking a snooze?<br>
<br>
Should a finger be offered for  perching?<br>
<br>
Without warning, her eyes blink open,<br>
<br>
and she flies away straight as an arrow,<br>
<br>
without so much as a “Good day to you” --<br>
<br>
leaving me  with unanswered queries.<br>
