The Defining Challenge

We have sought for many generations.
You are the chosen one. 
Many have failed before you!
Only you have a chance to prevail.

So ride Roland, ride!
The Dark Tower Beckons.
Allow nothing to stand in your way.
You will face many obstacles and tests along the path. 
You will be offered enticements and diversions. 
But never stray from your appointed purpose. 

You must make a stand,
and confront the evil of The Dark Tower.
You must challenge its power.
You will blow the bejeweled sacred horn,
and hold the note at the end.
Only then may our deliverance be assured! 

We will live unafraid under the sun.
We will finally be free,
to fulfill our intended destiny. 

NOTE: This is one of several pieces I have written concerning the concept of
the Dark Tower. I first learned of it in eleventh grade when we listened to
the radio-play and read the text of Louis MacNeice's "The Dark Tower." Next
came the Robert Browning poem, JRR Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" and
Stephen Kings seven volume saga. I am both fascinated by, and a bit obsessed
with the idea of the Dark Tower and the quest that must be undertaken to
overthrow it. Perhaps this is because it offers a concrete way of banishing
evil from the world. Unfortunately it is almost certainly the case, that
such is a problem of far greater difficulty and complexity, if it is even
possible.
