Birds , Bees, and Wild Beasts Dine at My Garden
My garden is an Eden, where life loves to grow.
Vegetables and flowers live there peacefully.
Gardens are a place of ruthless competition.
Growers must be prepared to wage constant warfare.
Everyone seems to love a cultivated bed.
Beside the birds and bees and killer ladybugs
are aphids, cutworms, cabbage beetles ,and their ilk.
I struggle to do all I caringly can
to preserve a balance in the land I cherish,
Without slaughtering Earth with ghastly toxins.
Deer, bears, beavers, hares come to visit my garden ,
to sample a buffet of fruits and vegetables.
I bound my plot in a protective barrier.
Deer easily jump over, and eat my string beans.
Rabbits excavate under, and dine on beet greens.
Beavers have beenknown to pilfer trees for their lairs.
A bear helps himself to my blackberries.
I thank God they arenot kept within the fence ,
and by the way, squirrels have conquered the bird feeders.
So, I grin and bear it all, while
waxing philosophical.
They must make a living some way.
We destroy theirnatural habitat.
But there is plenty left
in my garden, for all of us.
