You were a giftout of nowhere --

joined   me in a trek through the woods,

when I most neededsomeone --

with barks thatcould crack a sidewalk --

courage that couldstare down a bear.

You ran like a torrentgoing downstream.

 

How I lost you willnever be known.

Did you know howlong I cried for you?

You were thereand then just disappeared. 

I never knewwhat happened to you --

whether hit by acareless car

or stolen fromthe barren streets

to languishaway in a sterile cage

and tortured insome laboratory.

Did someonetake you for a pet,

not knowing aheart in anguish, 

left empty andbereft by its loss?

 

Do you know Ilooked for you everywhere? --

in a black dogthat looked like you?

Hell is to findand unfind so quickly.

My grieving seemedto last forever.

Even now Isometimes call your name.

I guess 40 yearsis enough.

You are long gonefrom this green earth.

So why do Ipersist in looking?
