This is Leonard's sub for  Sept.

Also a reminder that pieces are due today.

Sad and Lonely Sounds

A single goose flying in formation,

screaming for  somesort of confirmation

that her essential essence still exists,

though her flock and mate were decimated

by the deadly sound of the hunters’ guns.

The sight of a wolf howling on a hill --

no answer comes to him this night.

His mate has died of starvation.

Still he listens for her cry.

No one knows why coyotes sing

their song of beauty and mourning,

sad as an old love gone wrong song.

Is it heartache or  my heart gone weepy,

hearing only the crying there?

The dulcet sound of a mourning dove,

soft tones, sweet and low.

How have I come to love it so?

So softly sad, almost a groan.

The saddest sound I ever  heard

was the silence of a mother cat

who lived with me in times gone by,

as she sat on her kitten’s grave,

for three days, after  it was drawn asunder

by the four dogs living next door.
