The Language Of Fear

The news came over the speaker
in the middle of a spelling test.
"President Kennedy is dead. Let's all stand and 
pray!"

Nothing came to me but the silent scream
"I'm scared!"
The shaking in my legs wouldn't stop.

"Sister, what happened?"
one classmate bravely asked.
We waited for an answer.

"Sit down and finish your test!"
Sniffles and whimpers cut the silence.
There was no one in charge and we knew it.

All these years later, no answers
come from the ones in charge--
this President isn't dead, but totally
oblivious.
Thin words are meaninless in all the 
hate, fury and fear.

I'm 65 now, not nine--
We are alone,
except for a hope to change,
care and pray knowing why.
