 Raccoons

If you’ll resolve to love a raccoon,

remember you can’t really trust them.

There’s a reason they look like they do.

I mean, with a mask that seems like a thief.

We ventured forth in our popup

when a group of raccoons came to visit

and entertained us with their capers.

Remember I warned not to fall in love.

Before we leave these leafy grounds,

we must keep it spick and span.

Don’t leave any edibles out

to tempt these thieving varmints.

So we left to find my daughters,

who were expecting us that day.

But then upon returning,

we found to our great surprise,

these thieves had broken in at will,

despite our careful preparation.

They’d found the way from underneath,

where elastic bands clamped the tops,

protecting beds from drizzle.

The four of them had done their will

on cans, jams, and other foods.

They didn’t need can openers

nor instructions how to use them.

When camping in the wilderness,

button up from top to bottom,

to mfprotect your goods from varmints.
