A Seemingly Ordinary Primate
C By Brad Corallo
Word count 239

Through vast misty stretches of time
a seemingly ordinary primate slowly climbs,
steps of the precarious evolutionary ladder.
In the million year plus process,
tail vanishes; carriage becomes more and more upright.
The ability to grasp and use tools develops and
combines with rudimentary planning.
Such is the beginning of human civilization.

What if anything drives this process?
Myriad crossroads and choices-
some good, some bad-
define the creature's being in the world.
Things wonderful and terrible
populate its history.
Not only has it learned to think,
it has learned to think about
its own thinking process.

At times it exhibits
startling levels of brilliance and compassion!
While at other times, the depravity of its actions
is truly heart breaking!
Some believe the sky is the limit.
Others cautiously site
inconsistent cooperation between individuals.
Its greed and casual brutality;
very concerning to many!

Will it exceed its potential and
climb the luminous stairway to the stars?
Or will it reverse its course,
descending back into savagery?
Constantly,
 fighting over everything it values?

Perhaps there is no answer to this question yet.
And its future will continue to be defined by its choices.
Some fear and believe that
its most crucial choices are at hand.
This is not a rehearsal.
The game draws ever closer to its climax.

May it choose wisely.
For there may very well
not Be a second chance.
