Hello, friends of Group 2,

I promise that this piece is the only one you will ever read that quotes
Marcus Aurelius and Bilbo Baggins in the same writing effort. From the
sublime to the rediculous indeed! However, for the record I did not plan
this in advance as one might suspect.

Thoughts on Truth and Happy Endings
A rumination in Poetic Form
C By Brad Corallo
Word count 290

I find as I grow older,
that in books or peoples life dramas
every now and then, I crave a happy ending.
"They all found what they always sought
and lived happily ever after
until the end of their days."
Sounds dated and corny, right?
I have always thought of my self as a realist-saying:
"people should rub their noses in the truth
however painful and ugly it is,
because it is the truth!"
This applies most strongly to
truths that exist because of us,
humans that is,
both individually and collectively.
"You did it, or we did it.
Own it damn it!"
Marcus Aurelius said
"the truth will set you free."
But in this life you learn pretty quickly That
the truth is often difficult to identify.

Alas, as we grow older
we eventually realize
too many painful, ugly truths
are dispiriting and exhausting.

This is of course why
people go to movies
and read books.
To identify with someone else's situation
and maybe do better than they
have done in their own lives.

I remember discussing the book:
"The Kite Runner" and saying
"one of the reasons it was such a good book
is that it has an ending like
many in real life."
That is true!
Many of the best and most memorable books
have such endings.

But if we are prepared to be fully honest
the 21st century world our species has created
abounds with painful, ugly truths.
And frankly, they are growing very tiresome!

Bilbo Baggins The Hobbit said
"oh no, that will never do,
books should have happy endings!"
Perhaps he was right,
At least, some of the time.
