Critiques for August 29, 2019 Group 2 Session
1. Joan's piece:
I read this piece multiple times both: line by line and as a continuous
flow. I must admit, I don't fully get it. I am not clear who the faithful
one is. There seems to be a bee as a key character but I can't connect the
be with "I" who withdraws. I wish I had more of value to say.

2. Val's piece:
A poignant piece which captures the writer's 15 year old realization and
sorrow. It is another example of conveying much in few words. I love the
line "Does she have a pretty name?" So beautifully evocative of an innocence
that is experiencing the beginning of unraveling.

3. Leonard's piece:
A very nicely done depiction of the true believer and how little room he has
left himself to grow. I don't know if a specific type of righteous servant
to the death is being evoked, though it does bring to mind a Jihadist or a
member of a death squad defender of a religious or political regime. A
therapist friend of mine says that mental health is determined by the extent
to which the individual can be comfortable in the face of ambiguity.
Obviously the protagonist here cannot handle much. For some, living within a
belief system where there are no unanswered questions and every duty is
clear, is the most desirable way to live. But Socrates tells us: "the
unexamined life is not worth living." I fully agree with him.

4. Alice's piece:
First, the poem is fully understandable. Perhaps not surprisingly, as a male
I can truly empathize with the voice of the poet. I can imagine the feeling
of exclusion and how it may lead to questioning one's value and situation.
These feelings of the one outside looking in are very nicely illustrated by
the piece. I am glad that the rational self ultimately realized that there
are many other wonderful things in life besides motherhood.
