Still Strong Enough

Leonard  Tuchyner 
Nine of us tramp through thick lush weeds 
across Saponi’s earthen dam. 
I show the way on old worn knees 
and my third leg, crook’d wood cane, 
to the aged wharf that still remains, 
though it has been so many moons 
since last I sat with rod and reel. 
The ancient wood is black and cracked, 
weather worn and precarious. 
I hesitate to test its strength, 
but Samantha jumps its timbers. 
She has not been there since a child. 
“Grandfather, it is still the same, 
just the way I remember it.” 
She doesn’t see decrepitude, 
only a solid memory 
of her innocent youthful times, 
When pier and I were young and strong. 
I hold my breath as we crowd aboard. 
the quay creaks when I lean against 
its sparse, dry-rotting, frail railings, 
and try to trust its waning strength. 
There is wisdom and heart to be taken 
in the lessons of an old stalwart wharf 
that still has the will and tenacity 
to hold a world on its withered decking, 
which is seen through eyes of loving memories 
as strong, beautiful, and reliable, 
in the fullness of its advanced  years.
