What We Know
As first nation people, we understand
the respect owed when we take the lives
of our Mother Earth's other children.
We take only what we need to live.
We believe that bear, wolf and deer are our kin.
We learn much about how to live from them.
We too will return to the earth when we die.
Watching our furred and feathered relatives we see
when one buffalo begins jumping for joy,
others will join him in the celebration.
buffalo shed tears at the loss of a calf.
All mothers will fight to protect their young,
whether they be she-bear or tiny song bird.
They will do what they must to keep their children safe.
We see that all life has equal value.
Each one of our brothers and sisters
are precious members of the family,
all have unique gifts
that fit them for their place in the dance of life.
Because we understand past, present and future,
people must choose wisely the paths we walk
so that our Mother's children might live.
for seven generations into tomorrow.
If we do not hold these lessons in our hearts and minds,
then none of our children's children will be born
and our Mother Earth will dance alone in sorrow
for bear, deer, buffalo and us when we have gone.
