Just a reminder your pieces are due today. Mine is below.

Old Maggie Magnolia 

 

Maggie Magnolia was unimpressive.

When we moved here thirty-three years ago,

we wondered whether she would exist at all.

In Winter she died down to her roots, 

to renew herself in summer time.

Three years took her to reach six feet tall,

and tell us our Maggie was here to stay. 

 

Now Mag is here in full magnificence,

to share her domain with Old Oak tree. 

Increasing her range, high, wide, and her base. 

New trunks grew from seed and rhizomic roots. 

Some we allowed and others we pruned. 

Maggie stands in majestic majesty.

 

A wet-heavy February snowstorm 

laid a quilt of snow that cracked and broke limbs,

causing blackouts throughout the Northeast. 

Many of Maggie’s branches where ripped from her, 

leaving gaping spaces in her canopy 

and rents in her bark which speak of disease.

 

It saddens me that such a friend may die.
