Sally’spiece for Feb
This is abeautiful piece of nostalgia.
Even thoughI don’t get the full meaning of aerogram,
I still getthe meaning of the poem very well.
I assume anaerogram is a letter from overseas.
It musthave been blue.
But howthat is related to a ribbon is a mystery.
The specialbond the aerograms forged between your young self and grandmother is clear.
It has nointerest to most eyes.
They onlyspeak of family news.
Pherhapsthe messages they sent had no value, except to the two people who shared them. But that is more than enough.
Aren’t youglad you kept them for over the years.
The lovecomes out very clear.
And, asusual, the reader is with you every second.
Yourdescriptions are some of the best I have ever read.
Brittlewith age, the British aerogram’s
Cornercrumbles in my hand.
One of manylovingly saved
Inagranddaughter’s once-pink hair ribbon
I don’t getthe above line.
What is theaerogram being saved in?
For morethan six decades, it is
A bittersweet attempt tobear witness
And turnthin sheets of paper
Intocrinkled forget-me-nots.
What isbeing saved, the aerogram or pinkribbon.
As a child,I believed
aerogramswere blue to match
the oceanthey traversed
I’m afraidI don’t know what an aerogram is. Are they blue in color?
>From anelderly lady in Leicestershire
To aschoolgirl in Pennsylvania.
I know thespidery handwriting
Relatesonly family news
Andinquires about my school days,
Brownietroop, and beloved dogs.
Missives oflove from one brittle with age,
Of nointerest to intrusive eyes after my death,
Theaerograms and bond they forged
Can remaintucked away for now.
The ink hasno doubt faded over time,
but thememories In the heart of the granddaughter,
Herself nowbrittle with age,
Remainfresh with just a hint of ocean breeze.
