MOTHER'S DAY

On the second Mother's Day without her,

my mother's daughter woke to the

ache of memory and warmed arthritic hands

on a cup of coffee while sitting with

the yellow Labrador who had loved them both.

Slipping a body grown lean through loss

into slim black jeans and topping them with

a pink sweater reminiscent of English roses

tended by the war bride mother in a small town American garden and

Not giving in to grief, my mother's daughter

picked up the yellow Lab's guide dog harness handle and

headed out to a bookstore cafe where,

with the weight of a sleeping dog's head on her feet,

wrote this poem in her head and held it in her heart.
