 Getting YourAttention 


 


Angela was flying to cloud number 5 in the accompaniment of Charles.

They were both on their way to harp lessons. Angela was huffingand puffing.  


 


Angel said, “Oy vey, this is one heavy harp. I need to restmy wings.  These clouds are never in oneplace. Each day it seems a little farther. And the wind is always blowingaway.  Let’s take a rest on that cloudover there. It looks so soft.”


 


Charles relented, and they both settled down on the next cloudthey came to.


 


“I thought all this rushing around would stop once I got tothis level of Heaven. Does it get any better when I get to the next level?”


 


“You’re asking me? It seems I’ve been at this place forever.Longer than you, even.”


 


They sat there for a while catching their breaths.. ThenAngela asked, “What do you think of the terrible mess down there?”


 


“You mean on Earth.”


 


Yes, that’s the one I’m losing sleep over. You know that’s whereI come from, I’m ashamed to admit.”


 


“I can see where you’d be bothered. But it isn’t your faultthey’re such ninnies.”


 


“I am to blame. I gave birth to five of those ninnies. Whoelse should I blame? Why is He doing this to me? Didn’t I raise them right? Whydoesn’t He do something about it?”


 


“I think he is doing something about it.  I think that Corona virus is something.”


 


“That’s what he’s doing about it? He’s killing my children withthe corona virus? Lucky me. He’s helping my children by killing them. What awonderful God. Who gave him that idea? Couldn’t he give them a real good spanking instead?” 


 


“Angela, what would you have Him do? If He isn’t harsh, they’llkill themselves with over-indulgence. They’ll use up all their resources and pollutethemselves.”


 


“You’re asking me? I gave birth to them. Something harsh,but not too harsh.  


 


“I don’t know, Angela. Haven’t you seen the stock market plummet?”


 


“Yes, and I’ve seen it come right back again. That’s notharsh enough.”


 


“No matter what He does, it isn’t good enough.  You can’t have it both ways.  If it’s going to work, it has to haveconsequences.  I believe they will goright back to squandering their resources until there is nothing left.  Then it will be too late. It’s a little tricky.Angela, He has to change them, not just fix their problems, before they can doit themselves.”


 


“I don’t need to be told what I already know. You’re right.But one little plague isn’t going to work. If I were Him or Her…. What is it?… firstit’s Him, then it’s Her, and now it’s both at the same time. The whole thing istoo confusing. Anyway, if I were Him  orwhatever, I would throw more than a plague or two at them.”


 


“Be glad that you are not Him. It’s a major responsibility.Besides, She’s only getting started. There will be more plagues. He’s alreadygiven them record floods, fires, Hurricanes and drought. What else can She do?”


 


“He doesn’t know my relatives. It isn’t working.”


 


“Have a little patience. He’ll continue to turn up the heat.He’ll just work with the same tools until it finally dawns on them.”


 


“But what happens, God forbid, if it doesn’t ever work?  Honestly, Charles, what if it doesn’t work?”


 


“I have to admit, it might not. They might abuse theirenvironment to the point of it not ever being able to come back. It’s aterrible thing to ponder.”  


 


“Oy, that’s horrible. I’m a newcomer here, only onegeneration. Most of my grandchildren are still alive. When they get here,they’re not the same as when they were little ones.  They’ll never be puppies again.  If they have their own children, they may bethe only ones left.  It’s a shame.  But oy vey iz mir, they participate in raping.Poor Mother Earth.  He shouldn’t let ithappen.” 


 


“It wouldn’t come to that. It couldn’t. Human beings willlearn, even if it’s right at the end.”


 


“It shouldn’t happen what could happen. If they let it go thatfar, it will take a long time to recover. It is not a life I would wish forthem. Tell me that it won’t happen, Charles.”


 


Charles was silent.
