How To Open a Box
by c. s. boyd
Jennifer removed a pot pie from her freezer, and
shot it with her ID Mate to read the instructions.
"Push in on tab and tear along perforation.
Pull back top.
Remove lid completely."
Jennifer found the tab,
used her fingernail to help break the seal,
and pulled up.
She heard and felt the satisfying tear along the left perforation,
but the right side was trying to come loose from the box.
She tried the other end pushing in hard
while holding the bottom of the box.
The tab came loose,
and she pulled up hoping it would open correctly.
No such luck.
Like the other end,
this side also tried to come loose from the box.
She ran her fingers along the top.
Searching for the perforations there,
To try to remove the lid that way.
Nothing.
She went back to the first end
and explored along the right side for the line along which it should tear.
She stuck her finger in the opening
to protect the pie
while she continued to work with the box.
Wait. What's this.
Suddenly she realized. The pie is upside down.
Well, , she mused,
The instructions said nothing about turning the box over.
Feeling foolish, she righted it,
and tried again.
Amazing how well things work
when you have the right perspective.
