Jamming With My Wife

When I’m in a stinking state of mind,

I call on my best tinkle-box player,

Crazy Fingers, my adorable wife.

I warm up the harmonica,

and we play our favorite tunes.

Maybe slow and summer, somnolent

like an old Irish lullaby.

Perhaps it will be fast and snappy

like songs sung in an old time pub.

Or foot-stomping, hand-clapping crazy,

as in “Pistol Packing Mama.”

Maybe bluesy as in “The Man I Love.”

But it has to have lots of soul.

It ain’t got zilch, if it ain’t got soul.

We swing right into melody,

and I can feel my mood transmute

following the spirit of the tune,

and mastering my nasty funk.

It’s a participatory sport.

You can’t simply sit back and listen.

One must become one with the melody.

The music must be begotten.

It needs be squeezed and shaped by the harp

and piano, the way my wife can.

In that way of playing music

there is nothing that can harm us.
