NINE MONTHS

Nine months ago today,

My husband died on

An unseasonably cold

And bleak May morning.

Unrelenting rain pelted

windows at the end

Of the hospital hallway

As His family and I,

Having left his body alone,

Waited for a down elevator.

One of his sisters who

Had spoken little to me

in years uncharacteristically ,

Called Me an amazing woman

As we huddled under

A useless umbrella on

Our way to a waiting car.

She was mistaken.

I was in shock and

Thought the weather

mirrored my loss.

Nine months later, it is

A warm February day

With rain rather than snow.

Be it climate change or

Nature's bewilderment at

the death of one good man

And at my life still

Turned upside down,

The elemental gods'

Mercies offer small comfort.

                                                Sally Rosenthal
