[DECtalk] my decTalk sounds strange

Well, I am glad that both decTalk, and softVoice tts have been preserved. I think that softVoice-tts can sing, also. Are you a programmer in general? Like with c and c plus plus? Or, are you only a programmer as far as knowing how to make decTalk sing?

A reminder:  www.theflameofhope.co is loaded with Dectalk stuff.  And wwwfhope.co/songs has all the songs that I have personally programmed and mixed.  New songs are added very frequently because through Dectalk, I am a singer and I do concerts.  I'm fixing volume issues with my latest stuff because I screwed up!  I try to have all the Dectalk stuff there is on my site.

I can't wait for September because I discovered John Famham in Australia.  I love his music!  So I'll be doing some of his stuff.  This guy blows me away!  I already did "DARE TO DREAM".  Totally awesome stuff!

Yes, but decTalk overall does a much better job at singing.

Eloquence can actualy sort of sing, if you set it to monotone, and then change the pitch for each note.

Well I sent my request to the Espeak list. Since both decTalk and softVoice can sing, and they have both been preserved as NVDA addons, they are both worth saving for future generations to use. After all, the modern voices like eloquence and the new vocalizer voices certainly cannot sing. But decTalk and softVoice can, and I am glad somebody has taken the time to preserve them and to make sure they work far into the future.

I don’t know anything about that, sorry. Maybe someone else do. However, I’ll make that pitch-list in a few days, if anyone’s interested.

Excellent. But what about adding decTalk and softVoice as loadable dll files and using them as extra Espeak voices?

It isn’t, I bought it used from a member of this list.

I use a serial to USB adapter.

It runs version 4.2CD, which, in my upinion, is the best version, closely followed by 4.3 and 4.41.

You have a decTalk express? It is serial only, right? I didn’t know decTalk express was still made.

My DECtalk Express sometimes says the pitch frequencies, when I change the pitch in NVDA, when I use my DECtalk Express with my computer, and I have a list somewhere of the pitch frequencies for the individual voices. So that way, I can work out a list of pitches for each voices, and send it to you.

However, it’ll probably take some time.

Yes I think you are right. I wonder what the pitches for the other voices should be? The bug is when I switch voices the pitch does not change in order to match the voice I am switching it to using the NVDA addon. I wonder how difficult it would be to add decTalk and softVoice as voices in Espeak? It would probably just be a matter of having Espeak load the dll files for decTalk and or softVoice tts and assigning them an espeak voice, such as:
Dt+m1 for Paul, and so on.

Hi,

I think the exact right pitch is 24 %.

Hi
The decTalk addon I am using was not sounding quite right when I compared it to some of the decTalk speak windows. I found out why. There is a bug in the addon where when you switch decTalk voices, the pitch is not set correctly. The pitch was set to 16, I was using Paul which is my favorite voice, and it sounded strange because Paul’s pitch for NVDA should be set to 25%. I changed it, now decTalk sounds much better.

Josh
