To expand on what Ed said:

The vocal-tract filters are IIR (Infinite Impulse Response) filters 
implemented with non-saturating arithmetic.. so if a combination of 
filter coefficients and input signal causes a filter's accumulator to 
overflow, that filter goes unstable. Because they are IIR filters, the 
effects of that can go on for some time (often until the next silence 
period, sometimes longer)
