[DECtalk] SB Talker

Hi Blake and all,

. To run SB Talker from the command line on Windows 7, you'll want to be in
the directory where your copy of SB Talker currently resides (i.e.
"C:\Users\Username\My Documents\SB Talker" or C:\SBTalker). Or, you can
copy SB Talker to C:\SBTalker and put that directory in your path.

Once you're in the SBTalker directory, run SBTalk.bat to load the driver.
That's SBTalk.bat, not SBTalker.exe. (If you run SBTalker.exe, you'll get
an error message that says the driver cannot be loaded.)

To test SBTalker, type the following at the command line and press enter:

Read Hello world, this is a test.

If you want to do further playing around with the Read program, type read
and press enter. Here you can type a line you'd like read back to you and
press enter. When you're done in the Read program, press Control-C to get
back to the command line.

You can also run the sbaitso2 program and chat with Dr. Sbaitso.

When you're done playing with SBTalker, you can unload the SBTalker driver
by typing remove. (This doesn't delete the driver file, it just unloads it
from resident memory.)

Hope all this helps. When I get time, I'll put together a little bundle
package of SBTalker with TinyTalk.

Jim

I remember using TinyTalk. It is the only screen readerfor DOS I know of
that spoke via SBTalker. In order to use SBTalker on Windows 7, do I need to
enter any specific command-line parameters?

Hi Blake,

I was able to get SB Talker working somewhat with command-line tests on my
netbook running Windows 7 32-bit. I used to use SB Talker with TinyTalk,
which I also found. I haven't played around with TinyTalk recently though.

Thanks Jim. I have found this zip on other sites over the years but it is
definitely hard to find. Although I can't get the programs in the zip file
to run on Windows 7 i.e. sbtalker.exe, they should run under Windows XP. I
remember getting sbtalker.exe and sbaitso2 to run on XP a few years ago even
though I was not using a Sound Blaster card. I used the Sbaitso program
which uses SBTalker primarily in my DOS days and had a lot of fun with it.

Here is SB Talker, for DOS, from Creative Labs. It's circa 1991. I had to
do some digging to find it, accessing old archives of NFBNet.org via
www.TheWaybackMachine.org, LOL. Enjoy. Carlos, if you want to put it in
the archive under Software, feel free.
