[DECtalk] The Dectalk site is gone, I think.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if the site is gone. It was a legal issue
waiting to happen. One reason why I quit hosting it was because I knew I
would get in trouble one of these days. It's one thing if it's hiding on a
private ftp system as it was when I had it, but another when it's on a
public, visible site with an obvious domain. Hopefully it comes back, but
don't plan on it.

I still have the archive here in the state it was in before it was taken
away from me. I made a promise to keep hosting it until someone else could
be found and I could transfer it to someone who I felt would take care of
it, but that option was taken away from me. Apparently it was downloaded
and put on the web without my knowledge or permission. While I'm the first
to admit that the upload process was awkward and inconvenient, I did allow
uploads which is more than the new site offered. I'm not saying that I
would host the archive again, but I would consider it if there is no other
option, at least temporarily. I don't think Jayson has the bandwidth, at
least last I heard. If nothing else, I could make a big zip file for anyone
who wants to get what I have. I don't know what changes were made after it
was snatched away from me, but based on complaints I've read here,
apparently uploads weren't allowed. I believe I have a complete copy and I
don't think the new site added or changed much.

I'll throw this out to the list as an informal pole. Should I bother trying
to put the archive back online? It would probably not be permanent and
would be ftp only. I would make an attempt to streamline the upload
procedure for those who haven't been able to upload, but the archive would
be mostly static. I was in the midst of reorganizing and moving things
around and I would continue that process if there is enough interest.
Probably what I would do is move all of the old archives into their own
subtree so people could easily find the new files. Otherwise, I guess the
archive will either stay gone or be hosted by someone else. Frankly, I'm
not really eager to host it again, but I'm not opposed if there is no other
option or if no one else wants it. My interest now, as it was before is to
make sure it doesn't die. However, there would need to be a sufficient
amount of interest to make it worth my time. One or two people aren't
enough. I don't know if you know it or not, but it takes a lot of time to
maintain an archive and do it right, especially if you're dealing with
upploads. I would allow uploads, but I'm not sure how yet. That's another
can of worms yet to be considered. Any remaining adult files would be gone
without warning, as would any obviously copyrighted music, entirely subject
to my judgment. There would be a bandwidth limiter in place so downloads
would be slow. Eventually, I would want to pass the torch on, but only
after I know the archive would be in good hands. Considering those points,
how much interest is there?
