[DECtalk] mod talker

Hi,
As I've said before, the developers know about the nonworking Sapi thing and
they're working on it. It's most likely a bug in their software, but since
they haven't yet been able to reproduce it themselves it's hard for them to
troubleshoot.
As for recording voices, I had some of the same thoughts you did when I
first started, but this isn't a product out of science fiction. The fact
is, by default, there are one thousand six hundred forty nine specific
things the system wants a speaker to say in order to generate a synthetic
version of that speaker's voice. This includes some sentences which a
person using a communication device might use, some words, some phrases,
some of which are reasonable and others don't make any sense (for example,
"latching churches" or "darling potato") and some pure nonsense not real
words which, I'm sure, is designed to capture several versions of different
speech sounds. This inventory of things to say is designed to capture all
of the sounds a person can make while speaking in the English language. In
order to make a voice out of a prerecorded thing, you'd certainly have to
create your own inventory from scratch since you couldn't make, say, a
character from a movie say the 1649 things it wants. You'd also have to
insure that every last speech sound got captured at least once. For a
demonstration of this, look at www.bluegrasspals.com/modeltalker and grab
sample1. Here, I had gotten to a point where several of the speech sounds
necessary to speak what I had typed had not yet been recorded, and the
result is gaps in the speech, since the system had no idea how to synthesize
those missing sounds. Also, there would need to be no background noise,
music, etc. in the files, since that would only confuse the recorder and/or
put undesired sounds in the speech produced.
Jayson.
