[DECtalk] Bandwidth limiting

Hi,
Nyud.net is not a mirror in the traditional sense of the word. Rather, it's
a set of servers which go out and retrieve files which people want, when
they want them. Once any given file has been stored on their servers, if
ever somebody else wants the same file it is retrieved from their servers
rather than having to come from the actual website server, thus speeding up
the download. The first person to download any given file will notice no
improvement in speed, since the nyud.net servers must get the file from the
original host just like anybody else. As I understand it, this network
dynamicly replicates content over its servers depending on the popularity of
the content. Thus, many servers could have one specific file. A service
such as this would be very helpful when a website is hit with the famous
Slashdot effect, wherein a popular site links to a site on a slow
connection, which then gets bombarded with requests and is barely able to
keep up. These servers don't and won't go out and grab the DECtalk archive
in its entirety. Rather, they grab only what people actually want.

Jayson.
