About splitting items...

I agree, this is a bit confusing.

Aren't there more subtle issues around
this?

In Gavin's example, if you want to split item 2,
you have to move to item 2 with control+rightArrow, then move your cursor
further along to the right, so you are actually positioned inside item 2, and
not just at the split point between items 1 and 2. You need to be inside
item 2.

The problem I have sometimes had is where reaper
splits all items at the cursor position, on all tracks.

It's not clear how it decides to work on all
tracks, instead of the one I have selected. But, I think I can force it to
work on the current track just by doing uyp and down arrow first.

So, given all this, when does one need to use the A
key to select the item under the cursor? That exists, and I presume it is
when you are just moving around the track, such as with the arrow keys, or page
up and page down. In that case, I guess no item is selected, so you would
need to do that to cause the item under the cursor to become
selected.

Key point is that you can not split an item unless
that item is actually selected.

But, I have seen cases where I had a lot more items
than I expected. And, that problem seems to relate to what reaper calls
Transients, which is a transition from a period of silence, to
non-silence. Is there some option to make reaper automatically split at
such points?

Likewise, whetehr control+left and right arrow move
from one transient to the next, or from one item to another. I would love
to have that cleared up.

with reaper

Hi Brett,

First,
recording in Stereo. Are you using Osara as your access plug-in for Reaper? If
so, move to the track you wish to record on, press the Applications key,
scroll down to Input: Stereo, right arrow, and select the channels of your
sound card you want to record from.

Second, splitting items. I found
this one to be a little tricky at first, but I eventually figured out how it
works, so I'll give a step by step example to try and explain it. Again, this
assumes you're using Osara for Reaper accessibility.

Let's say I have
three items on a track, and I want to split item two into three more items. I
move to item two, and hit S. My track now has four items. I move to item
three, then move my edit cursor to where I want to make the next split, and
hit S again. My track now has the five items I wanted. If I had merely moved
to item three and hit S, I would have heard "0 items added," because you can't
split at a point where a split already exists.

Hope this helps. Feel
free to contact me if this is still
unclear.

Regards,

Gavin

all,

In the past I have used Sonar with Jaws, but since the Jaws
scripts haven't been supported in a long time and they are having some
issues with later versions of Jaws, I am trying to make the transition to
reaper. Inconsistencies like being only able to make one split then when
trying to split a different item, I am told no items added have frustrated
me. Has anyone else seen this issue and know a workaround or what I may be
doing wrong. Before trying to make the split, I am making sure the track I
want to make the split on is the last touched track.

Secondly, is it
possible to get reaper to record in stereo? If I connect the line out from
my electronic drum kit to the line in on my sound card, Sonar records in
stereo, but reaper only records in mono, which isn't what I want. I have
looked in the I/O dialog for the last touched track by pressing the letter I
and it shows that the track is set to two channels, but I am not really sure
what I should be looking for? Does any one have any hints or suggestions for
this one?

thanks in advance,
Brett.
