hmm ok i understand now. I don't have a solution though. How many sound
devices are we talking about? Something on your motherboard, and
something more pro that your monitors are connected to?

Are there configuration files where I can set the synth by hand?

You can control NVDA synth
options with numpad insert control s
there you can choose synth, and out-put device and such.
The NVDA menu is accessible with numpad insert n, you can
get to preferences and in there the synth menu, is the same
thing.

devices in my computer that I installed NVDA on. Is there a way to
change the synthesizer NVDA uses, without opening NVDA? I'm not
sure what synth it is trying to connect to, so I'd like to make sure it
connects to a specific one that I know has working speakers on
it.

Also, there used to be a bug in JAWS where the reading would get confused
in Notepad. Sometimes it would even make text invisible to the
speech synth. Mostly it would just confuse next and previous lines... I
would often put text in the wrong places in the document, as a
result.

Since I've installed NVDA on this machine the issue is happening again -
with JAWS. This is an old WinXP machine, 32 bit, and JAWS 15.
Could the issue be that, since there is no further support for XP, I just
shouldn't use NVDA and JAWS together on the same machine?
