I have opened cwp files in notepad before. None of these are exactly 100% fully human readable, but they give you enough info that you could try to recreate a corrupted project or edit one if you know what you are doing.

On Jul 13, 2014, at 2:04 PM, Victor Tsaran <vtsaran@gmail.com> wrote:

I didn't realize that one could view the Protools project files in a text editor. This is true even if the guitar doesn’t start until measure 8 and keyboards doesn’t come in till measure 21 and etc. When exporting the stems it would just insert silence in the guitar or keyboards files where no audio exist as a blank place holder. Once they have the wav’s imported in pro tools they can save it as a PT session file. As christ pointed out before, even if you were both using pro tools unless you both had all the same exact plug ins installed, they still wouldn’t be able to open your pro tools session with out issues. Thats why sending wav file stems is the way professionals trade and collaborate on sessions.

Now if you care for the more detailed explanation.. keep reading…

.RPP files and PTF, or PTX are just the project file format for reaper and protools respectively. the project files are tiny files that basically contain info about what to do with the wav files in the project, and doesn’t contain any actual audio information. For example the RPP file tills reaper that track one is named guitars and has a eq, compressor and reverb in its insert and they are set to these settings etc. You can open an RPP or PTF/PTX file in a text editor like notepad or text edit and look at one yourself to see what info it contains.

On Jul 12, 2014, at 6:12 PM, Jes <jessmith@samobile.net> wrote:

Thanks a lot Crystal, it really helps. I would never, ever, ever use a virtual machine for any kind of audio stuff. Virtual machines ain't made for that.

Original message:

I've never used protools but have done a lot of research on it - I
also, have never been able to wrap my head around reaper other than
just using it for recording - everytime I try to use a plug it is very
um...not as streamlined? I'd say. Yeah, probably. Will
there be challenges on windows with Reaper? Yeah, most definitely.
Windows isn't a system built for audio engineering, and though as
Chris said you can build a custom Windows rig, it would probably cost
more or about the same as the Mac and Protools that will be ready to
use out the box.
