It's a huge pain for sure.

I can disable it easily enough, but when you
actually want to use the card for somethig useful, it becomes a hit and miss
proposition.

This is one reason I tend to by-pass the realtech
whenever possible and use another sound card.

Another thing that adds even more insult to injury
is that the onboard cards, and many of the other consumer grade options out
there don't have a true line level jack anymore.

It's all done by padding the same op amps to one
degree or another,

turn it up for mic, and turn it down for
line.

This doesn't take impedance or front end load
in to account, back in the days when we had descrete op amps for line and
mic in our hardware even in our cheap sound cards,

you could actually get a decent recording,

ok, I'll give playback and surround sound and all
that

to the modern

cards, but just try regulating a hot line level in
to a supposed line adjusted jack on any of thewe new fangled devices, it's gonna
distort,

and it's even hard to get a usb device that does
this right, you can find microphone inputs all day long on usb,

but the one's which boast a line level do the same
thing, just pad a mic line input.

So your choice is to go to a low end interface like
the lexicon alpha for about 60 bucks

to get a decent line input.

I found a thumb drive size via chipset
device,

which comes with software which actually lets the
card go up to 192 khz in some cases,

and doesn't do too bad for line and mic level
adjustments, but it still splits the difference,

but

for 20 bucks, I guess it's not the worst in the
world.

It still doesn't do as good a job though as even a
junky old soundblaster live card did for a consumer grade line
input,

or an audogy.

Those things even for a consumer grade card would
take quite a bit of punch on the front end before distorting.

Oh well, welcome to the new world of corner cutting
convenient hardware I guess.

You can bet if there's a way for them to save 1
tenths of a cent,

they will,

whether it's leaving out a jack,

or using bridged technology instead of supporting
slots directly on your pc,

or not supporting direct monitoring on your digital
recorder,

let's just half ass everything and get it out the
door, they'll buy it anyway 'grin'.

Yes, windows 7 does care about audio jacks being plugged in ,
depending on
the sound card of course. In fact, it's probably simply
a sound card
behavior, but it is a increasing trend, now that we have
smart jacks,
whether we want or need them or not. .
When I first got
my 64-bit system, it was set up for 5.1 audio output, and
I didn't
know it. I plugged one cable in to the front jack, to port
eloquence
audio, and no signal was sent out. I had a hell of a time getting
speech. Finally, I figured out that the sound card refused to send
audio
out the front pair, because I didn't also plug something into the
back pair,
etc. In other words, if you aren't going to plug in all
the speakers
required for the current configuration, we deem that to be
inappropriate,
and none of them will work. In my opinion, that
kind of crap doesn't add
anything to my party, just creates annoying
hassles and disception.

----- Original Message -----
From:
