<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>But usb3 is supposed to be bi-directional, so
that's one good thing that might put it on par with fw,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>but the noise factor and sustained through put is
another factor,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>it's not always about the raw speed but the

<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>I think the higher mid level and </FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>higher end are still holding solid in fw, it's
just that fw isn't included natively on mobos so much these days.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>But if you get a name brand controler card, you
won't have problems,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>like siig or belkin,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>and there are important technical reasons why fw
has it over usb even today, the better usb devices from rme can get nice round
trip latencies with asio but since usb can only go one way at a time, and
isn't pier to pier like fw can be they have to do tricks, also fw can
guarantee bandwidth two ways,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>it was designed for audio from the git
go.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>Usb 3 devices haven't shown up yet, neither have
thunderbolt, but time may change that,</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>the reason usb proliferated so much is the low
end home market and they're cheap to make.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>But you always have more issues with bus noise,
and poorer perfornance.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT size=2 face=Arial>There are only a few devices that really stand up
to fw or card based connections with usb and they'll cost you
plenty.</FONT></DIV>

<DIV><BR></DIV>Hi:<BR>I use the pcie had cards and have a lot of their
plugs. Once you get through the registration process of the card
itself, you can buy plugs and update your license. The software for
all the plugs is actually installed on your system and you can try them out
for 30 days. I use it with Sonar, but it would probably be even better
with reaper because you would be able to access all the parameters at once
instead of four at a time. And the stuff sounds great. Lots of
great reverbs, channel strips, vintage echo devices and choruses, and tape
decks and moog filters and a nice guitar amp simulator, they have a bass amp
one too. You really can't beat it. I don't have the appollo
series because I have enough audio interfaces around and firewire is kind of
on its way out anyway, it's just too fickle and usb3 is becoming more
viable. I guess if I were doing a lot of live recording of bands and
stuff, it might be nice to have the plugs monitored directly through the
interface, but I don't even know if that would be accessible. Their
control meter and console is only accessible with OCR, and works better with
nvda than jaws if you're comfortable with object navigation and have VMouse
installed. <BR>Gord<BR>On Aug 5, 2013, at 3:17 PM, David P Shortland <<A
