The other thing, is the method of selecting the items
to work on. I'm slinging it off the cuff here. So, others who
know, plese chime in.

It seems that there are several methos for selecting
the portion of audio. You can split into items, and do the
control+left/right arrow thing, or you can establish loop points with alt left
and right bracket.

I think the former methd is restricted to the current
track, mostly because the boundaries between items on one track have absolutely
nothing to do with the item boundaries on another track. So,
control+left/right arrow makes sense only in the context of a particular track,
not the project as a whole.

If you want to work across multiple tracks, I think you
need to use the other method.

Is that a useful clue?

Hi.
I've found that shift space is causing all the trouble.
Don't know where I got the idea that I had to use it to select
tracks, but it's at the root of my problems. Once shift space has been pressed
to select a track, it stops you from using shift down arrow to select
several tracks, and stops you from selecting items when you have
more than one track in your project.
Simply unselecting the tracks again
using shift space doesn't reverse the restrictive behaviour. I still
haven't found a way to select a portion of audio in several tracks in one go
though. Trying to understand reaper seems to have become my new obsession.
It's going to keep my OCD happpy for months.
